Biomanufacturing is a key part of the bio-economy in Ontario and there are an increasing number of biomanufacturing companies in the Province and our Region. With traditional manufacturing and biomanufacturing having a lot in common, these companies are hungry for people with the traditional skills but need to understand how to access these workers.

The Workforce Planning Board has worked with a number of sector councils over the past few years and one of our newest partners is BioTalent Canada. BioTalent Canada's research fuels the bio-economy by providing insight into the skills being demanded by the biomanufacturing sector. This insight is used for skills development information and in turn provides mutual opportunities for both employers and the workforce. In partnership with industry, BioTalent Canada has developed tools and resources…

Many manufacturing companies are indicating a need for new workers, The Workforce Planning Board of Waterloo Wellington Dufferin (WPB) has been working with local manufacturers to understand the skills sets currently in demand and have arranged a Job Fair for the industry with the financial support of the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities.

Over the summer of 2011, the Workforce Planning Board of Waterloo Wellington Dufferin (WPB) conducted a study on the Manufacturing Sector in Wellington County and its ongoing recovery from the 2008 recession. An analysis of the economic data confirms that this Sector continues to be a significant contributor to the local economy. Discussions with local manufacturers and other stakeholders as well as an analysis of job postings indicated that the Manufacturing Sector in Wellington County and…

Businesses in the region survive and thrive by finding skilled and eager employees who want to contribute to the success of the business. Many employers are experiencing increased difficulty in finding candidates who are skilled and job ready. One potential solution is to look differently at the challenge of matching job requirements and abilities and thereby tap into an underutilized talent pool; persons with disabilities.

There are many agencies and service providers in the region that can assist with various aspects of hiring and retaining persons with disabilities. The Making Cent$ of Abilities Coalition (MCAC) is a not for profit initiative that focuses on informing and educating employers (large and small) with respect to the realities of, and benefits to, hiring and retaining persons with disabilities.  MCAC  is having their formal launch on October 20, 2011 at the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex.  The…

October is the month of thanksgiving and gratitude. With most adults spending more time at work than anywhere else, the workplace can be a good avenue to direct some of this positive thinking!

The pay cheque is important,  but what really keeps us engaged at work is a sense of meaningful work and our relationships with others in the workplace. Study after study reinforces what we probably all know intuitively: people work better when they are happily engaged in what they do. And appreciation is a major part of that. Feeling unappreciated or disrespected is the number one reason people quit their jobs.

Happiness counts!

An outstanding leader that I have had the pleasure to work with…

Our partners over at the Workforce Planning Board of Waterloo Wellington Dufferin have put together some great videos to highlight local manufacturing opportunities to youth and spread the word that manufacturing is alive and well and ripe with job potential.

The Workforce Planning Board of Waterloo Wellington Dufferin actively monitors the local labour force including that within the Manufacturing Industry.  We recognize that although manufacturing employment fell dramatically during the recession it is now growing and the labour supply is getting tighter.  Despite these growing employment opportunities, young people are telling us that they don't want to work in the industry. Parents, teachers and media are sending the message that "manufacturing…

Workplaces seldom offer the same “new beginnings” each September, as what youth experience when they return to school. There's an excitement in that change. But, even if we do not “return to the classroom,” we can recreate a bit of that fresh start for ourselves in the workplace. Here are 5 ideas to do that.

Fall, the season of "back to school," promises lots of change for the kids - new classes, new friends, new things to learn and do, and maybe new pencils, crayons, clothes and knapsacks. It brings a fresh start, the excitement of something different, room for self-reflection, and the potential for growth.  Workplaces seldom see such clear "new beginnings" each year. But, even if we do not "return to the classroom," we can recreate a bit of that fresh start for ourselves.  Kids don't get all the…

After just cleaning out an aging parent’s home, I am much more focused on de-cluttering! I’ve become much more interested in the reality shows where cluttered homes are cleaned out and refreshed! I look at my own home and know I have work ahead of me.

I've learned there are many contributing factors for clutter.  Some people accumulate a lot of stuff because they've grown up with very little and material goods take on great importance. Some people don't want to let go of items from their past, while others are afraid to part with gifts they have received for fear of offending the giver. Accumulating clutter is also linked to our spending habits. We have become a far more materialistic society, and are encouraged to purchase new stuff to…
