I am fortunate to have been involved in environmental and energy related issues since 1992. It all started with an idea to engage and educate employees, and it worked!
From January to April of 1992 I partnered with Ontario Hydro (remember Hydro) to deliver the first Employee Energy Awareness Program in Ontario for industry (so they told me). We ran a three month training and suggestion program for 300 plant employees about energy efficiency at home and work. By comparing energy use at home and work we were able to engage employees in identifying opportunities in the workplace, and their homes.
Within a few months we had executed on about 65 suggestions that exceed $150,000 per year, or about 15%, in annual savings, total hard capital, $10,000! Employees also saved thousands of dollars by improving energy efficiency in their homes.
I never thought 18 years ago that the experience would lead to doing something similar on the Internet in 2010. That said, there was no real Internet for the general public to use in 1992 anyway!
Fast forward to today; GreenNexxus recently launched our Employee Sustainability Platform (Green ESP), an online tool that connects your employees to your sustainability strategy - encouraging them to do one act of green at a time. By helping and encouraging your people to do acts of green, like change a light bulb, car pool or plant a garden, you are helping the environment and encouraging them to bring those habits and culture to your workplace.
There are numerous management systems and corporate strategies for reducing our collective environmental footprint, but at the end of the day, everything we do to make a difference is still an act of green. Please check the Green ESP today - maybe your act of green will lead to thousands more!
